Country Legend George Strait Gives Back to a Hero During His Live Concert

At a recent concert in Pennsylvania, George Strait paused his performance to honor a true American hero—retired U.S. Army Sgt. Tyler Welty, a Purple Heart recipient. But what began as a tribute turned into something far more emotional and unforgettable.

George Strait Sponsors a Mortgage-Free Home for a Wounded Veteran

Strait, a U.S. Army veteran himself, has long supported service members through the Military Warriors Support Foundation. Over the past decade, his partnership with the nonprofit has provided homes for veterans and Gold Star families. On this special night, he gifted Sgt. Welty a mortgage-free home, thanks to the support of Mungo Homes and Wells Fargo.

As the crowd chanted “U-S-A,” Sgt. Welty stepped onto the stage, assisted by a cane and greeted with thunderous applause. Introduced by retired General Leroy Sisco, the audience learned of Welty’s sacrifice—his second deployment in 2012 left him severely injured by an 82mm shell. He now lives with traumatic brain injury (TBI)PTSD, anxiety, and severe depression.

Despite the challenges, Welty reflected on his time in uniform with pride:
“It was the best experience of my life. It came with many sacrifices, but it is all worth it.”

A Surprise Proposal in Front of 65,000 Fans

Just as the emotional tribute reached its peak, George Strait handed the spotlight to Welty one more time. With one hand on his cane and the other holding his girlfriend Reanna’s, Welty dropped to one knee and proposed in front of 65,000 cheering fans. Her answer? A tearful and joyful “yes.”

Reanna later shared the unforgettable moment online, writing:
“Yeah, your man loves you—but does he love you enough to propose on stage with George Strait in front of 65,000 people?”

As of May 26, the two are now officially married.

A New Home and a New Beginning

Shortly after the concert, Welty and his family were handed the keys to their new Georgia home. With five children, from a teenager to an infant, the gift couldn’t have come at a better time.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp presented the keys personally, stating:
“We are so grateful for your whole family’s service. We know that freedom is not free.”

Welty was visibly moved by the moment:

“We can’t believe this is our house… I’m set for life. This is one of the biggest moments of my life.”
