Country star Alan Jackson retires from touring - Los Angeles Times

At 66, Alan Jackson has finally revealed the disease he’s been hiding for years, stating, “I didn’t want anyone to feel sorry for me… but it’s time to tell the truth.” For decades, Jackson was known for his down-to-earth country music hits, but behind his signature hat, he was fighting a private battle.

In an emotional interview, he disclosed his diagnosis with Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease (CMT), a genetic disorder affecting nerves and muscles. He’s been dealing with the progressive condition for over a decade, quietly managing symptoms like difficulty walking and balance issues.

Jackson confessed he was scared of how people would see him after the diagnosis and didn’t want the disease to define his story. But now, he has found peace with the truth, knowing his fans deserve the same honesty he’s always shared in his music.

He acknowledges that touring will be different, but he insists, “I’m not going away.” The outpouring of support from fans has only deepened their respect for his resilience. As Jackson puts it, “I’ve still got songs in me, and as long as I can stand… I’ll keep singing.”
