Introduction

My Way [50th Anniversary Edition] – LP Club

My Way: A Song of Reflection and Resilience

“My Way,” though forever linked to Frank Sinatra’s iconic voice, boasts a surprising backstory. The song’s melody originated in France, composed by Jacques Revaux with lyrics by Gilles Thibaut and Claude François. Their 1967 creation, “Comme d’habitude” (meaning “As Usual”), expressed a very different sentiment – a melancholic ballad about a love affair’s end.

Enter young songwriter Paul Anka. Inspired by a performance of “Comme d’habitude” during a trip to France, Anka saw the potential for a powerful song in English, but with a completely transformed message. He penned new lyrics that captured a sense of defiance and self-reflection, a man looking back on a life filled with regrets but no apologies. The song became a tailor-made farewell to the music industry for his friend Frank Sinatra, who was contemplating retirement.

Sinatra, known for his bravado and commitment to his craft, resonated deeply with the newly minted lyrics. In a rare afternoon session on December 30, 1968, Sinatra along with a 40-piece orchestra, led by his longtime pianist Bill Miller, captured the essence of “My Way” in a single take. The song became the title track for his 1969 album and was released as a single shortly after.

Despite critical reception that was lukewarm at best, “My Way” struck a chord with the public. While it only reached No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the song transcended chart success. It became an anthem for those who had lived life on their own terms, a testament to perseverance and the courage to forge one’s own path. Sinatra himself never intended the song to be a signature tune, but “My Way” undeniably became synonymous with his legacy – a man who left an indelible mark on the world through his music.

“My Way” continues to resonate with audiences today. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the universality of its message – a celebration of life’s journey, the good, the bad, and the road less traveled. So, when the opening notes of “My Way” begin, prepare to be transported by a song that is as much about self-acceptance as it is a tribute to the legendary Frank Sinatra.
